I-Dee Interview
MikiWAR: Were you a turntablist first when you became a DJ?
I-Dee: I started out first as a mix DJ in '97. My older brother was a DJ, so I learned mixing from him. About a year or two later I saw my first DMC video. Battling really sparked my interest. It became a hobby at first, then it became something religious; I would go to school, do homework, and then lock myself in the bedroom to practice scratching and whatnot. I went behind my brother's back for a couple years until I saved up enough for my own setup.
Dainjazone: Give us a rundown of your placing in the DMC and all major battles.
I-Dee: My first goal was to make it to a regional so everyone could see my set. I was fortunate enough to make the US Finals two years in a row, won the DMC US Supremacy in 2005 and I won Roc Raida’s (RIP) first Gong Battle in 2006. Thanks to him I was fortunate enough to have a lot of opportunities come my way.
MikiWAR: How old were you when you were competing in all of this?
I-Dee: I entered my first battle when I was 15, made US Finals when I was 17, won DMC US Supremacy when I was 18, and now I’m 23.
Dainjazone: How has the transition been from the battle world to the clubs? Do you still keep up with the practicing?
I-Dee: Yea. I still try to make a juggle or two once a year. There’s not too many heads that still do that. I know Craze and A-Trak will cut in between their sets but no one is coming out for the turntablist aspect anymore. It’s something I enjoy and I’m doing my best to try to preserve it outside of the competition realm. It definitely hasn’t been the same. A part of why the battle scene is whack now is there’s not enough funk; too much technicality and not enough practicing. It’s hard to transition out of that when you’re trying to make a living. If you’re trying to do a two hour party rock set, then at the end showcase some cool stuff, the crowd won’t know how to digest a triple-click orbit-flare-crab combo. So you just got to keep it simple but effective.
MikiWAR: You’ve also taken on some production; an album that has already dropped and you have another one in the works, right?
I-Dee: Yea. "Solitude" came out in 2008 and I have another one coming out this year. It’s probably going to be the worst album ever made. I have Eli Porter….
MikiWAR: For those who don’t know, Eli Porter is the original 50 Tyson.
I-Dee: Haha. I have Jean Grae from DC. My first album was a turntablist album. On the new album, I’m rapping for the first time, but I’m poking fun at myself. The first half is pretty funny and the second half is pretty serious. My goal for the album is to show the listener that DJs have feelings too. We’re not just people who play music. The funny part is the gimmick to get listeners intrigued. The second half is super serious; I touch on domestic violence and drug addiction. There are certain things I haven’t been through, but guys like Roc Raida and DJ AM (RIP) have. No one [outside of the DJ community] really cares what AM did off the decks. He helped a lot of people. Roc Raida was a family man. All he wanted to do was play his music and go home to his family.
My goal with the album is to show what I’m interested in and the stuff I’ve been affected by. There hasn’t been a turntablist album that you’ve really listened to and said, “Ok, I know what that DJ has been through,” as opposed to a rapper or singer. If we’re going to try to preserve turntablism, it’s critical that stuff like this has to be made.
MikiWAR: Tell us the story about you and Justin Bieber.
I-Dee: I was chillin’ with Asher Roth last year. Him and Justin Bieber have the same manager. His manager was looking for a DJ to go on tour with Justin. This was before Justin even blew up. It sounded like some bubble gum, teenybopper stuff. I said, “No.” Who would have thought he’d be the biggest pop star in the world (room laughs)?

Mr. Choc Interview - Season 2
Dainjazone: What’s new in Mr. Choc’s world?
Mr. Choc: I’m the Director of the Scratch DJ Academy here in Los Angeles. We have a new semester starting September 11th, so to all you DJs that want to get your bars up and get your mixes right, hit me up. I’m still doing Soul Assassin Radio with Muggs... having a good time with that. I do Little Temple every Friday in Silver Lake, Carbon every Wednesday with Byze One and Babu in Culver City.
Dainjazone: All right next question. Miki jump into it! Go!
Mr.Choc: Jump into? That means it’s going to be something with drama! Bring it!
MikiWAR: How was the transitioning process out of Power 106?
Mr. Choc: I will be honest, when I first left Power 106, it was hard. I spent 11 years there. I asked myself, 'What am I going to do next? Do I work at another radio station?' After you work at Power 106, it’s really hard to make the decision to go to another radio station. I was getting some offers from smaller markets out of the city, but I didn’t want to leave LA. To me LA is the best city in the world. I stayed here, toughed it out and fell into some things. I’m still having a good time and I still love what I do. What else do you want to talk about because you are looking at me like, “Come on Choc, answer the question!”
MikiWAR: Well, was the departure on your own terms?
Mr. Choc: I’ll say it like this: we left on good terms. The thing that I loved about leaving Power is getting to do a last show. Nobody gets to do a last show. I was blessed because I was able to get a last show to say goodbye to the listeners and the fans. I am forever grateful to Power 106 for that. They provided that platform for me to perform on. Without Power 106 no one would know who Mr. Choc is. I’m pretty sure a few people would know, but not to the level it is now. I just went back to do a set in March for my birthday. Felli Fel asked me to come back and rock.
MikiWAR: Is there any itch to go back to radio?
Mr. Choc: No. If something comes up, looks and sounds right, then I’m with it. For the most part, I’m good. I’m having fun right now. I’m having more fun than I’ve had in a long time.
Dainjazone: What is it about now that makes things more fun?
Mr. Choc: I get to do what I want! I don’t have the restrictions I had at Power 106. Today I was thinking ‘I have to do the Mikidz Show tonight. What am I going to play? Everybody plays electro and house. Maybe I should do an electro and house set since no one has seen me do that.’ Nah! Everybody does electro and house. Let me go and do what I do; hip hop, breaks and funk. I do house and electro too, but I’m not trippin’ on it like that. I have an 18 year old son who is making house and electro tracks. My son is taking over.
MikiWAR: Is it Lil Choc? What’s his DJ name?
Mr. Choc: He’s trying to figure it out. He wants to be something dope. Him and C-Minus’s son do production together.
Dainjazone: What’s your travel been like?
Mr. Choc: I went to Norway earlier this year. That was cold as hell. Hell isn’t cold, but it was cold. I’ve been in Miami and Utah…
Dainjazone: You’re missing a big night in New York right now.
Mr. Choc: I had to stay because of the Scratch DJ Academy and I had already booked this show through Miki. I wasn’t going to leave ya’ll hanging… Even though there is no money in this! But, I’m still going to come and represent!
MikiWAR: We have plenty of cold water… (room laughs)
Mr. Choc: If I were still drinking, I’d be drinking with ya’ll. I’m five months sober. I wish I had done it years ago. I feel more focused and as you can see, I’m a little more in shape.
Dainjazone: P90x?
Mr. Choc: No! The gym. Eating right. No lap bands. No operations. I just wanted to get my mind and body right. It’s about to be Choc Diesel in a minute son! I’m happy about my health right now so I have to shout it out.

Thee Mike B Interview
MikiWAR: Are you originally from LA?
Thee Mike B: I’m originally from here, but I lived in NY for a long time and I guess that’s where I got my DJ start. I was DJing while I was in LA though. The LA scene inspired me.
Dainjazone: You were a resident at one the best parties LA has ever had: Banana Split. You guys had some of the best producers around the world DJ this party. Can you talk about how great that party was?
Thee Mike B: It was a weekly that we did originally at LAX nightclub. It was AM and Aoki’s idea. AM said, “I own this nightclub, why don’t I do something cool here?” He had been talking for years about doing a party where he can play whatever he wants. At the time, he became friends with Aoki. So they started this night. I actually thought I was heading towards the end of my DJ career. I was moving into more of a day job and I was “over” doing Hollywood clubs. I volunteered to come in and play every week because it was a chance to play good music. Not the stuff that’s played in commercial clubs. That’s how Banana Split started. No one knew what was going to come out of it. It changed a lot of things; hip hop radio format, the lives of rappers (young and old), Aoki’s career sky-rocketed, and a lot of DJs who were initially unknowns came out to LA for the first time became pretty big names after playing there.
Dainjazone: Name a couple of your favorite nights at Banana Split? Name the guys that came in and just wrecked shop.
Thee Mike B: DJ Medi was a stand out to me. He definitely came through and played one of the better sets I’ve ever seen. Kid Capri playing in there was pretty amazing because it was so left-field. He played a hip-hop, NY club set. We had a two-year anniversary night that was pretty amazing. It was DJ Falcon, Busy P, AM, and myself. That entire night was recorded. Just look for the audio online.
Dainjazone: Now you’re doing Drais on Sunday nights. What’s the difference and similarities of Drais and Banana Split?
Thee Mikie B: The similarities are Rony’s Photo Booth and me. Haha. We were both at Banana Split and now Drais…and Dim Mak of course being behind it. It’s a totally different vibe. I think a lot of the same kids come out. There are definitely a lot of people who I have no idea where they are coming from. The party has been crazy and packed every week. We’ve had Diplo, Sammy Bananas, Ninjasonic, Mustard Pimp, Dances With White Girls, AC Slater, and Star Eyes. We haven’t been playing to a bottle service crowd. We’ve been keeping it real musically. That’s one of the similar things to Banana Split. Its been working out. The party has been fun and I think the Dim Mak guys are doing a good job with it. Shout out to Fashen and DJ Metric: the other residents.
MikiWAR: I think a lot of guys have respect for you because of your knowledge of music. What your approach on finding music? Do you produce stuff yourself?
Thee Mike B: I produce stuff myself. I recently started taking it seriously. I put out my first original track called “Born To Lose”. I played that earlier in my set. That’s coming out under Money Studies. I have another project with Nate Day. We are called Camo UFOs. It’s an inside joke that turned into a full time job. Our stuff is a little more on the drum and bass tip. We did a “Pon De Floor” remix for Diplo and he put it out. We had an official remix for one of Sinden’s tracks under Fools Gold. We’ve done remixes for Laidback Luke and Gina Turner’s project, Mike Posner, Glitch Mob, and South Rawkus. We have 12 or 13 remixes out and we also have an EP coming out next month on Top Billin’. We recently played at Audiotistic and we’ll be playing at Metropolis, and Avalon (Control).
My whole thing is I like to play different kinds of music and you never know what I’m going to play. I like to think I play it all pretty good, but to bring in a whole other genre that can’t be played in too many Hollywood nightclubs; to go to festivals and play drum and bass and play on these giant sound systems has been awesome.
