Dainjazone: Electro was big in the LA house party scene and blew up through Myspace, can you touch on the origin of the electro take over?
Hyphy Crunk: About 6 years ago it started. I think it's just another version of house.
Dainjazone: In the San Fernando Valley where we're from, if you were going to a party it was a hip-hop house party. Out in LA where you're from, if you go to a house party, it's all electro.
Hyphy Crunk: I think it's just who you're surrounded with. There are some spots that play both because of the radio. Even in some of our sets, we'd love to drop hip-hop or mashups when we're playing electro.
Mikiwar: What is the original spot of The Heist? And give us a timeline.
Hyphy Crunk: The original spot was Mensa Cafe in Downtown Long Beach. It was a 215 person dive bar that we begged to be 18 and over. We've been in 7 different venues... that's kind of ridiculous.
Mikiwar: Do you remember all the venues?
Hyphy Crunk: I always get this screwed up... but it goes Mensa Cafe, House Lounge (Maywood), Airliner, Crash Mansion (The Grand), then back to Long Beach at The Cave, Florentine Gardens, and now Tatou. That's actually correct! (laughing) I think Tatou is our new home.
Dainjazone: It used to just be you guys on Thursdays. With the new spot that's bringing competition, do you think its good for electro music or a bad idea?
Hyphy Crunk: It's good only if the promoter and the people behind the event are doing it for the right reasons. I would love to see a bunch of house and electro parties going on, but if you're just throwing a party and biting everything everyone else is doing because that's what's hot right now, then you're in it for the wrong reasons.
Dainjazone: What does it take to put The Heist together?
Hyphy Crunk: A lot goes into The Heist. I have a staff of 25. In production alone, we plan out our stage before we set them up. We lay out a blueprint and we begin setting up at 5pm every Thursday. We do a lot that makes us stand out and it's something you won't find in LA... unless you go to a festival.
Mikiwar: You have a pretty shoe collection. How does it compare to DJ AM's?
Hyphy Crunk: Haha AM used to laugh at my collection. It's nothing compared to his collection. I have doubles of some pairs because I want one to wear and one just to have, but sometimes I wear the ones that aren't supposed to be worn. My friends get mad and call me a spoiled little bitch.
Dainjazone: Do you mind if I air out your age? I tell a lot of people how old you are they are blown away b/c they see what you've done with The Heist.
Hyphy Crunk: Haha. No go for it.
Dainjazone: Hyphy is 23 years old. Now, you have to feel accomplished for being so young and doing what you've done. With that said, what do you have planned for the future with The Heist and yourself?
Hyphy Crunk: Well the venue (Florentine Gardens) was holding us down. It wasn't the competition. I couldn't put money back into The Heist like I usually do. I just wanted out of the venue. There was thought to shut it down, but I couldn't do that.
We also found this new location so we kept on going. I need to get The Heist flowing again so I can focus on production and traveling.
