Fresh One Interview

Recorded live at DJcity on The MikiDz Show - Monday, December 21, 2009.

MikiWAR: What is Sleeping Giant Music? Is it an agency? Is it management? Is it a label?
Fresh One: It's an agency as far as DJs, but back in the day, we did have a lot of artist bookings. The music side is coming around. There's a lot of producers involved. It's just a big family. Over the years it's turned into an agency, but originally we used it to brand our mixtapes.

Dainjazone: We've had guests on our show that drop San Diego as one of their favorite cities to DJ. What is it about San Diego? Is it the girls? What makes it so special?
Fresh One: I've been DJing in SD for 10 years and I've seen it go through some changes. You used to see a lot of house DJs out there. Over the course of years you started to see more hip-hop DJs like Fashen, Spider, Scene, and the SKAM DJs. I think that's what made the city change. It's growing up fast.

Dainjazone: What are your favorite cities to play in outside of SD?
Fresh One: I definitely like playing in Miami, New York... Providence was really fun. I'm just down to have fun. Where ever there is a party, I'm down.

MikiWAR: Do you ever find a major difference in the home crowd compared to the out of town crowds?
Fresh One: Yea. I do. I can see a major differences in, let's say, SD and Dallas. SD has a really live crowd.

MikiWAR: You have a lot of edits out there...
Fresh One: I have probably 220-250 edits. I have my own personal edits and mashups from back in the day.

Dainjazone: How long have you been doing these edits?
Fresh One: Since Serato came around.

MikWAR: How do you feel about DJcity?
Fresh One: I love it! It's one of the best record pools I've ever seen out there. I love how you guys have the instrumentals, dirty, clean, acapellas... it's like having the actual record.

Dainjazone: Somebody wants to come back to the show... good answers! (haha)
MikiWAR: Do you post edits?

Fresh One: I have some on DMS and DJcity. I've been trying to get back into the studio to do my own remixes. A lot of mine are quickmix edits to fit better in the club and basically just rock the party.

MikiWAR: What program do you use to do your remixes?
Fresh One: I'm kind of an old school dude. I have an MPC and a bunch of hardware. I have all the programs. I'll use Pro Tools, but I used to be a hip-hop producer back in the days.

Dainjazone: How long has Sleeping Giant been around?
Fresh One: For about 6 years now. I'm actually one of the guys that's at the office everyday...

Dainjazone: Oh there's an office???
Fresh One: Yea, there's a bunch of us doing shit together.

Thank You!

2009 was a huge year for DJcity. Thank you to all the DJcity members who support us and allow us to do what we love. You keep us dedicated to working on the site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We have some huge plans for 2010. In addition to further exciting developments to our digital record pool, we also have some other projects in the works. We can't let everything out of the bag right now, but we've been working on DJcity 3.0 for about a year now and it will launch in early 2010. It might include things like a DJcity MP4 Video Record Pool...

We also want to give back to the DJ community that we're all a part of. We have some even bigger live DJ sets lined up for later in 2010 from all your most requested DJs on The MikiDz Show on DJcity Radio of course all for free. We also want to give some rewards benefits exclusively for DJcity members. Look out for our announcement coming soon for large permanent discounts on equipment we all need like control records, needles, headphones, and dj bags.

Many, many more developments to come...

DJ Enrie Interview

Recorded live at DJcity on The MikiDz Show - Monday, December 14, 2009.

MikiDz: Give us a little background; what inspired you to deejay? Why did you move from New York to LA?
Enrie: Here comes the part where people do the math. Back in the 80's I used to hang out at a roller rink, cause that what the teens did back in the day. I started hanging out in the dj booth and watching the dj and was fascinated by what the dj did. He created a vibe for the whole place. So one summer I saved up my money from a summer job and bought equipment and practiced literally every day. I started back in '84 and practiced in my basement til I moved to LA in '88. Believe it or not, I was playing house music when I first started, along with freestyle. I moved to Cali cause my dad wanted to get a job out here and there was no way I could survive on my own with a part time job in my first year of college.

MikiDz: What's your favorite basketball team?
Enrie: Anyone who beats the Lakers. I just dont like the fact the Lakers got Kobe. Kobe is definitely one of the best in the game, however take Kobe away, and no more Lakers. A team consists of more than one player in my book.

MikiDz: What were your thoughts before launching Beezo.net?
Enrie: I came up with the idea because I was always downloading tracks and mixes from blogs. It dawned on me that there should be a user friendly website that allows the dj's the biggest audience possible. So instead of a dj limited to how many friends they have on the social networks, it allows a the dj to be exposed to more people than they could alone. Everyone visits Beezo loves DJ mixes, so it makes sense that a dj would wanna post a mix there. It's the perfect audience for a dj. I also wanted to make the site as useful as possible to the dj by allowing the dj to post his bio, videos, links, schedule, and to collect a fanbase. For those that didn't know, we reduced the price to upload to Beezo to $20 and the mix stays on Beezo forever so people can always find your older mixes. No more expired links or looking for old cds.

MikiDz: Future projects for Beezo.net?
Enrie: Right now we're giving Beezo a facelift and we'll be adding a blog that's fun and educational. For example, I wanna talk about how to open the night for a headliner dj. I'll also have guest djs give their 2 cents on certain subjects. The main thing is to teach the new generation how to do things properly and help them succeed. Beezo is also working on launching a weekly dj battle held at Backside Records in Burbank that'll also be streamed online. We're looking to start in February 2010 and we're planning to hold it every Tuesday from 8-10pm. I'm really excited about that project cause people love watching djs, and djs like showing off. I'm very close to locking the dj battle in San Diego as well on Wednesday night. The dj scene needs something like this. Too many djs don't know about, or have never seen many battles, so this will definitely be for the new generation of djs.

MikiDz: Recently, we've seen you twitter about using Ableton Live. What do you think of it, and will this change how you used to make mixes before?
Enrie: Ableton is a godsend. Shouts to Mikiwar for the crash course. I was sponsored by M-Audio and was an avid Torq & Pro Tools user. Now with Ableton, I can do everything in my laptop with no external gear. I was recently in Chicago and laid out tracks for my radio show before I went to sleep. I mastered the mix on the plane and sent it out when I got home. It's an amazing program and I can't wait to see what the Serato x Ableton program can do.

MikiDz: How do you think all the new video djs will affect the club atmosphere?
Enrie: I see video mixing as more of a showcase thing. I've been to clubs that had a VJ spinning on monitors all over the place. Most of the people in the club didn't pay attention. Think about it; when you go to a club, you wanna look at the chicks, and the girls wanna see the guys, so I dont see it becoming a major focus in clubs. I know some djs that are doin video mixing now, but they just mix videos. Anyone can do that now with Serato and blog hunting. I do respect what 2nd Nature and Roonie-G are doin with videos. They take it to the next level. I will stick with audio all day and leave the videos to the pros.

MikiDz: Thanks for coming through, what are your thoughts on the MikiDz Show?
Enrie: It's an honor to be up here and I like what you guys are doin. I know there are a lot of new djs that never get the chance to see the big dogs in action, and an old dog like me. Listening and watching dope djs inspires me and I hope it does the same for the all the new cats.

MikiDz: Being a member of DJcity.com and being familiar with other digital sites, what do you think of DJcity?
Enrie: DJcity has become the standard in mp3 pools. They have a good team that provide the basic tracks that every dj including myself needs. DJcity, blogs and Ableton and I'm good!

DJ Enferno Interview

Recorded live at Enferno's studio near Washinton D.C. on The MikiDz Show - Monday, December 7, 2009.

Mikiwar: Everyone wants to know what head phones you're wearing?
Enferno: These are Ultimate Ear Brands. We got these on the tour. They do a custom mold to your ear so it blocks out the sound. I'm listening to everything nice and loud but not too loud to where its going to kill my ears.

Dainjazone: Let's say I'm the average Joe (get it), how much would it cost to get those?
Enferno: I got it for free dog!

Dainjazone: Of course you did! Why would I even ask? It doesn't matter.
Enferno: Actually, I really don't know. When I got these, I was the last person on the tour to get them. Everybody else on the tour (this is the Madonna Tour by the way) had them from some other major tour. I was the only one who didn't have them...

Mikiwar: "What's up rook?"
Dainjazone: "Who's the new guy?"

Enferno: Someone gave them to me and it was like Christmas. They came in a box and had my name on them and everything.

Dainjazone: Explain to everybody what you got going on; Obviously you have the turntable set up. Where are you creating your beats from?
Enferno: Ok I'll try to keep this short. I've got two laptops. Everything is being pieced together on one laptop. The laptop is running Ableton Live and all it has is drum loops. There's nothing else in there. It's all the keyboard sounds and stuff. I can hit buttons and record myself playing certain things. If I don't like it, I can undo it, then layer it on top. The turntable is another thing I can sample as well as blend. It's a traditional two turntable setup, just a little more complicated to navigate.

Mikiwar: I wanted to touch on a crew (pause) I've known about since I touched turntables...
Enferno: Trooperz Crew: Quixotic, Geometrix, Oz, Sneek, and of course, I-Dee.

Mikiwar: How did you guys get started? You're all from this area right?
Enferno: Yes all from this area. I met Quix at a gig. He comes up to me after the gig and says, "Hey man! Let me show you something. It's a crab scratch." He starts scratching real fast and I think, "Damn! That guy goes faster then me!". I had been djing for 8 or 9 years at the time. We battled each other for a little bit, then we kind of practiced together. He introduced me to Geometrix. It's a really dope crew and really good people.

Dainjazone: You said you don't know anybody from the turntablist world that can do the live remixing and you don't know anyone from the house side that can do the cuts. No one comes close to it?
Enferno: I'm not saying no one is doing it, but I haven't seen anybody mix the two. I know a lot of names in the turntable would just from being in the scene. There's a couple guys that can do the looping. That's been around forever though. I don't know anybody that can do it quite like this... marrying the musical aspect with the turntable side. Who knows?

Dainjazone: You're coming from a turntablist background and usually turntablists end up rocking clubs or sticking to underground hip-hop. So what made you think of all this?
Enferno: Shout out to Spryte! The battle djs have this fascination with getting up in front of a crowd and performing something as opposed to just being in the background. What dj wants to be spinning in a corner or a closet without some sort of connection with the crowd? That's the underlying part of it, but I saw guys like Q-Bert--who's one of my idols--touring the world using the turntable as an instrument. I can't quite do it like that, but I wanted THAT feeling. I wanted to do something like that, but make it my own. I have a musical background; I took piano classes when I was a kid. Everything is coming together with this project. I had to use my nerd side to program all my stuff.

Mikiwar: And this did expose you to the opportunity of touring with Madonna?
Enferno: The short story is... I was down in Orlando at this club called Blue Martini doing this type of set. It was from 11-12 so it wasn't a primetime spot. The music director for the Madonna tour was there. The next morning, I was at the airport surrounded by a bunch of loud kids cuz it's Orlando and Disneyworld and all, and got a call. I didn't recognize the number so I didn't pick up. So I heard the voicemail and all I could hear is Madonna and Justin Timberlake. I'm thinking, "I must be hearing this wrong because of all these loud kids". So as soon as I hang up, I get a text message that says as plain as day, "I'm the music director for Madonna and Justin Timberlake. I saw you do your show last night." It was as simple as that. So I gave him a call. Of course we needed to get her to approval because she signs off on everything.

Mikiwar: Hanging out with Madonna, did you get a chance to pick her brain?
Enferno: I didn't need to because I was around it everyday. It was so apparent. It wasn't apparent at first, but when you work together for six days a week for three months straight before the actual show starts. Especially with all the creative input I got to have as far as musical arrangements. I got to help out with that. We would get music suggestions from her. She would say some stuff that would never occur to me. She's a genius. She's such a perfectionist. You can't help but be the same way.

Dainjazone: What is the voice sampler you are using?
Enferno: It's called Artillery and I have it hooked up to a track on my session. I can hit a key and make it stutter, add a delay, make it reverb, talk backwards...

Dainjazone: Greatest moment on the tour?
Enferno: It was our first show. Nothing like the first time right? I didn't know how I would react to getting in front of 50,000 people because I've never been in front of that many people before doing anything. I don't think I've been around that many people period! It was a really, really crazy adrenaline rush. "Like A Prayer" was a big part of the show. I had a large part in that. And I started working on this arrangement for that show and after months and months of anxiety, it came down to that moment. To see the crowd man... jumping up and down... that moment was one of the biggest highlights.

Mikiwar: "Hey Mickey" or "Highway To The Danger Zone"?
Enferno: "Highway To The Danger Zone"

Dainjazone: 2-0

DJ Reflex Interview

Recorded live at DJcity on The MikiDz Show - Monday, November 30, 2009.

Mikiwar: I'm going to try something new. I'm going to do the rapid fire questions. I need the response quickly. Here we go: what's your favorite color?
Reflex: umm umm....

Mikwar and Dainjazone: No no too slow too slow!
Reflex: There are so many colors in the world.

Mikiwar: Ok lets try this again. What's your favorite...
Reflex: Blue!

Mikiwar: What's your shoe size?
Reflex: 10 uhh 10 1/2

Mikiwar: What network is your phone on?
Reflex: AT&T

Mikiwar: 2 x 2 - 3?
Reflex: 1

Mikiwar: Miki or Dz?
Reflex: Miki

Mikiwar: "Hey Mickey" or "Highway To The Danger Zone"? This is important.
Reflex: Highway To The Danger Zone

Miki: AAAHHH!!!
Dainjazone: YES!!!

Reflex: WTF was that? What was that about? What about the serious questions?

Dainjazone: We asked people on Twitter 'what do you prefer: "Hey Mickey" or "Highway To The Danger Zone"?' It ended up being a tie on Twitter. So, we are going to start keeping track as of now. Starting with you.
Mikiwar: Just ask him the serious questions so he's happy.

Reflex: Haha

Dainjazone: So a lot of people don't know about your relationship with Kanye. Can you touch on that relationship?
Reflex: I started out at Power as an intern. I was a part of the street team. I did everything I could at the station. I was about 20 years old. An A&R by the name of Jay Brown was the secret person of Rocafella; he was Jay-Z's right hand man. He had put me on the road with an artist named Knoc-turn'al. Kanye had produced a record for him called " Music", which was actually a very good record. I basically became Knoc-turn'al's road manager. It was me, rolling around the USA, with about 4 or 5 crips like 3 times my size, trying not to get beat up everywhere...

Mikiwar: Well you're not a big guy...
Reflex: Is that a challenge?

Mikiwar: Go ahead I'm sorry.
Reflex: Long story short; I was in New York for the first time. I was 20, maybe 21 by then. We showed up to Kanye's apartment in Jersey for his birthday. Kanye introduced himself and said, "You know I rap too! I wanna start coming to LA". I was the first person to embrace him, first person on stage with him, helped him press his vinyl, helped him in the studio... After his accident, I was there to help push him in the right direction. Is that enough?

Dainjazone: I wanna know about the part where you played the video in a room full of djs...
Mikiwar: VHS
Dainjazone: You said you would call out the djs who left the room.

Reflex: Haha I brought Kanye to the radio station and I'm excited. I don't have a huge voice at the radio station at this point. People like Mr. Choc and those who read the credits knew who he was because he had already produced the Blueprint [Jay-Z] stuff. So he came up extra cocky like Kanye USED to be. Not that he's not now, but he was at a point where he would be like, "Yo! I'm the next best rapper. I wanna show yall the video to 'Through The Wire'." Every DJ except for Mr. Choc, Echo, and Vice were checkin their watch and saying, "This dude Kanye is a fuckin asshole. I just can't wait to get out of here." Kanye says, "Yo I wanna show you the video." The VCR was in another room. There was about 12 djs in the room. The only djs that went to the other room were Mr. Choc, Echo, Vice and myself. Everyone exchanged contacts with him and stayed in touch with him. So basically, Kanye blew up. His album came out and did great. All the djs that left came up to me saying, "Yo Reflex, I need to get a drop from Kanye." I made sure Kanye cut drops for everyone in that other room and the rest that left got slept on.

Mikiwar and Dainjazone: Haha dope!
Reflex: It's just a lesson to learn that if someone comes off cocky to you, you should take a step back and appreciate where they're coming from and the passion that may drive them to be cocky... and never to sleep on anyone.

Mikiwar: What are your top 3 food spots and this will lead to another question.
Reflex: Casa Vega if I want to spend money, Subway, Aroja Sushi in the Valley.

Mikwar: Cool so you didn't mention the one I wanted. There's a spot that is arguably the best burger spot on the west coast.
Reflex: Oh In-N-Out? That was my 1st job. When I lived in Barstow that's where I worked. I was the fry guy. I would also dj the high school dances. I was making like $125 and for weddings $250. I was ballin at the time cuz all my friends were working 9-5 and I was making $600 a week. I started working at In-N-Out just for more income. A lot of people would pass through there. So i met Tatiana Ali, Tyra Banks, George Clooney, Tupac, Oscar De La Hoya. When hot girls would come to the counter after I call their number, I would tell them, "you know I dj too," and they were like, "Oh cool! Where's my food?"

Mikiwar: What happen with Tatiana Ali? You put your job on the line.
Reflex: At the time, Tatiana was a big name. I was in the back peeling potatoes. I got word, "Ashley Banks is here." She was driving off in a van and I'm running after her with an In-N-Out time sheet and a pen yelling "Tatiana! Can I get your autograph!" So they stopped the van and she crawled out from the back and she signed it saying, "To Anthony, I hope you didn't get fired." Because I was yelling out, "I think I'm going to get fired!" Later on, I met her up in the studio through mutual friends and I told her the story. She blushed.

****INTERVIEW CONTINUED AT THE END OF THE SHOW***

Mikiwar: It was dope to have you on. Your set is directly going to my Ipod.
Reflex: It's just nice to play whatever the hell we want: from some of the corniest pop stuff--not that I played that tonight--to hip hop, dance, funk...

Mikwar: What's the corniest song you play?
Reflex: That I like? Oh! 3 by Britney Spears. I'm not mad at Miley Cyrus. I'm able to separate it. I enjoy seeing people have a good time. As far as requests... it can get annoying, but I don't mind. I'm grateful to even have a job doing this. I'm the first person in my family to do something outside of our family trade, which is work on the railroad, so it's a blessing just to be here.

Dainjazone: You guys, over at the station, have a lot of angry west coast rappers, picketing, causing ruckus. What's your opinion on the west coast rap scene? A lot of people don't know what gets played on Power unless they tune in online. You just don't hear too much of the west coast rappers unless it's Snoop or the other heavyweights.
Reflex: I think we all miss hearing so much good music from the 90's and we had nothing to worry about because they were all hit records. They just happened to be west coast records that were hits. I don't take it that seriously. At the end of the day, the people that are making noise out in LA, we're behind them. You know, you got like J Rocc, Bishop [Lamont], Nipsy Hustle--who I hosted a mixtape for, Glasses Malone. When I first heard of him, I drove down to Watts just to meet him and show him how to get on the radio and create a buzz for himself. So I don't really see the disconnect. Good records get played on the air. People have this misconception of west coast being a typical "street hip hop thing". That's apart of it, but LMFAO is technically from out here. Same with the Black Eyed Peas. Far-East Movement is a local group. We support local acts. If it's a hit record we're going to play it. What's frustrating is that artists think that radio is the first stop for their record. Virally, the internet is bigger than radio now. People get signed from singing on youtube. People need to change with the times, know their resources, and not always depend on radio.
