DJ Ever Interview

Recorded live at DJcity on The MikiDz Show - Monday, Jan 4, 2010.

MikiWAR: Where are you originally from?
Ever: I'm from Anaheim. Well, some people think I'm from TJ but I'm really from Anaheim. It's the same thing though--Lil' Tijuana is Anaheim!

MikiWAR: What got you into djing?
Ever: When I was growing up I had a neighbor who was trying to dj but he wasn't really good and at the time I didn't know. He had turntables and a nineteen inch mixer--like when you moved the fader you needed two people. I thought, this is cool, and he showed me a video that he had recorded of a battle with The Executioners and Q-Bert. I thought, this is dope, and got into it that way. I started listening to Power 106 and heard E-Man, Mr. Choc, and Coke-E kill it. I asked my mom for some turntables. Even though she didn't make no money, she got me a pair of Geminis for Christmas and I've been working ever since. That was in like '98, '99 when I was 12 or 13 years old.

Mikiwar: Dope, and you started doing radio...
Ever: I did radio in Riverside at Wild 96 from '03 to '05... I think.

Dainjazone: So what brought you to Power 106?
Ever: Ah man, I was having a session with my boy Juicerock and he heard me scratching and told me I should make a demo to give to someone at Power. I'm like, I don't know anyone at Power. He told me, just do it, so I did a live two hour demo all on vinyl. We just drove up to Power and I was gonna give it to the receptionist, but when walked in we saw Echo. Echo remembered Juicerock--he's hard to miss cause he's a big dude with a long beard. Shout out to Juice Rock. Long story short, I kept giving a whole bunch of demos to Echo, and Echo finally gave one to E-Man.

MikiWAR: How do you feel the transition went to go from starting on vinyl at one station to mp3s at another?
Ever: I can't hate on Serato because it's so much easier and convenient. It was just fun back then. You really had to dig for records. You had to do your homework, like if you wanted to bring in a record at a certain certain point, there weren't any cue points. You had to search for it. But Serato is dope. It opened a lot of doors for people, and I'd rather carry a laptop than eight crates of records to the club.

Dainjazone: Who do you think are the best scratchers on radio right now?
Ever: By far, nobody is killing Coke-E right now.

Dainjazone: Are you saying that cause he's in the other room?
Ever: Nah, I'm not scared of that guy. But nobody can mess with Coke-E on the cuts on the radio. Fuse is really good too. Everyone at Power has skill. Before that, Melo-D & Choc... but those guys aren't on the air anymore. By the way, Coke-E's like 40 years older than me so he's got some experience on me.

MikiWAR: I saw a scratch session you did on the Serato Itch. What do you think of it?
Ever: It was my first time using it. I know Virman uses it to play music when he travels for America's Best Dance Crew and Far-East Movement, but I couldn't really get a feel for it when I was cutting on it. Oh I forgot to mention Virman is dope at cutting too. That little guy is pretty good, but he's like 40 years older than me too.

Dainjazone: What are your favorite scratches?
Ever: Like the names of them? I do a lot of orbits. I used to know how to chirp, but I don't know what happened. I'd like to say I'm diverse when it comes to cutting. I practice being clean and try to do it all. I notice there's a whole bunch of new scratches that only Coke-E can do right now, like the Autobans and Boomerangs... but all he does is sit at home in his boxers and cuts.

Dainjazone: Do you have any upcoming projects?
Ever: I'm working on a mixtape, but I'm busy and I'm a perfectionist so it's hard for me to just knock anything out. My dad still has some of my old cassette tapes. Maybe we can dig some of those up. I still rock all kinds of tapes in my car. People don't even know that. Like I got Sonora Dinamita in the car right now!
