Erick Neutron Interview

Recorded live at DJcity on The MikiDz Show - Monday, Jan 11, 2010.

MikiWAR: We wanted to have you on the show to display one of the "lost arts of djing", which is finding exclusive tracks.
Neutron: You used to have to dig for records. That's something that as definitely changed. The one bad thing about Serato is once you find a dope track and it goes into rotation, it gets burnt out real quick. Hip-hop fans can listen to old cuts all the time, but with electro tracks... stuff gets burnt out real fast. These djs are really on top of their game and got to have exclusive tracks to throw people off and make their sets stand out.

MikiWAR: Not like I was around back in the day, but I heard people used to cover up the labels on their records...
Neutron: Yeah they used to put those white stickers on their records. Now I actually don't hide the tracks on my laptop. It's just dope music. If you can get it, go ahead. I mean, it's cool if you're holding onto a couple really dope tracks or personal edits, but it's really about spreading the music. Music is for everybody.

MikiWAR: For those who don't know, you are a resident DJ for The Heist, now at Tatu. And you guys just had a huge moment, which was Together As One, or TAO (but not the one in Vegas). How was it?
Neutron: We reached 75,000 people. It was a seriously crazy experience. I didn't sleep for two nights before it. I was awake making edits and finding a couple more tracks that I really wanted to play. I was setting the setlist so I made sure I had all my ups and downs. It was definitely one of the highlights of my career.

MikiWAR: Well you got a decent set time right?
Neutron: Yeah, I got to do the count down which was really cool. I found out only a few days before, but it came out good. Shout out to Brian Matrix out of LA. I played his countdown track. I messed with it a little bit, but it was a real dope.

Rell: How did you get involved with The Heist family?
Neutron: Well me and Mark [Heist founder Hyphy Crunk] pretty much grow up together. We've been buds since freshman year in high school. I used to go to his house and mess with his records. I think the first record I ever touched was a Snoop Dogg record. We linked up and started throwing a friday night together in Long Beach, but not The Heist though. We did a couple other spots and Mark came up with the idea for The Heist, a night that was more fun for us playing just dope music. It was one of those nights that was just a bunch of friends. Score was also a part of it from the beginning, and it just progressed from there. Now I think we pull almost 1700 people a night. It's a lot of fun, and it's a real blessing. We never thought it would turn out like this.

MikiWAR: Who are your favorite producers right now?
Neutron: The people that know me, know that I love that dirty, grimey electro. So anything on Boyz Noize Records like D.I.M or Shadow Dancer. That kind of stuff is my personal touch, and I hope I go in that direction when I start producing. But for producers right now, an obvious one is Laidback Luke, but I gotta say my boys Cold Blank and also DJ Que, they have a real dope sound. I like Wolfgang and A-Trak too, and all the house stuff like Usual Suspects and Swedish House Mafia.

Rell: What inspired you to do your DJ Hero Mix?
Neutron: I stumbled across the tracks, but once I found them I just wanted to pay respect to the DJs who made those mixes like Z-Trip and DJ AM. I know they're not remixed live, but every aspect of them, like the scratching and beat juggling, was just really dope. I think DJs will appreciate the mix even though, as DJs, we make fun of DJ Hero. But DJ Hero definitely shows the power and position of DJing. DJs are moving up! As long as we work together as a community, DJs can only get bigger!
