DJ JayCeeOh Interview

Recorded live at DJcity on The MikiDz Show - Monday, Feb 1, 2010.

Rell: Tell everyone about the Super 7 Mixtape.
JayCeeOh: Volume 3 just dropped. Super 7 is a mixtape series I started in 2008. Basically it features 7 DJs--myself and 6 other DJs. Every DJ gets 10 minutes to go in and pretty much rip it as hard as they can.

Rell: So who are the 7 DJs that you have on Volume 3?
JayCeeOh: There's Team Canada (Grandtheft & D.R.one), Spryte, Risk One, Scene, M.O.S. & Klutch all on Volume 3.

Rell: You throw a party last year for Super 7 at SXSW in Texas. Are you going to do another one?
JayCeeOh: That's the plan. DJcity definitely held us down last year and we threw a real dope party. We're looking to do it bigger & better this year.

MikiWAR: Do you have a personal favorite on any of the Super 7?
JayCeeOh: Come on man, you know you can't ask me that. Every DJ brings it and have certain parts of their sets that are amazing. Depending on my mood, one thing's my favorite one day and another's the next.

MikiWAR: Where are you originally from?
JayCeeOh: I'm kind of from all over the place. A lot of people think I'm from Boston but I'm definitely not from there, from there. I was actually born in LA, and lived here as a young kid. I lived in Hollywood, the Palisades for a minute, and actually right up the way [from DJcity] so that's how I know about Tito's Tacos. You didn't even have to ask me, "Tito's Tacos... Three". Then I moved to Pittsburgh for high school. That's where I started DJing, but it was more in the bedroom--practicing type shit. Then I moved to Boston for college and stayed there for a couple years. I graduated from Emerson, which has a real big radio station that I became the hip hop director of. Big artists came through like Wu-Tang and everyone else. I started working for Undergroundhiphop.com and was touring DJing for Ed O.G. & Akrobatik, and doing U.S. & Europe dates. I was in a group called Special Teams. We put out a record with Duck Down. It had Pete Rock, Premier, Alchemist on production. After a while being in the Boston hip hop circuit and being the fourth person in line gettin paid off the same pay check, I realized it ain't that big; people aren't on some hip hop shit like they used to be. So I moved to New York where I'm at now to push my own brand and focus on myself.

MikiWAR: Do you hold down any spots in New York right now?
JayCeeOh: I don't really do any residency in New York. I kind of bounce around and do the traveling thing. New York is dope; no one can really say shit about New York. It's one of the best cities in the world. But DJ-wise it's kinda tough to get money out there. If I could make 4-5 times as much to travel, I'm gonna do that.

Rell: Tell us about your upcoming gigs.
JayCeeOh: Yea man I'm real excited about doing my 2nd European tour, just as a DJ, not backing any artists. I'll be hitting Paris... a couple dates in Belgium... Oslo, Norway... Stockholm, Sweden... and ending up in Amsterdam.

Rell: Are you with an agency?
JayCeeOh: Nah, I do it all myself. Not that I'm not looking to get down with something like that in the future. I had a manager who was also my homie, but I decided to go solo and progress with that. I'm just gonna keep doing what I do.

MikiWAR: I know you're a humble dude, but let's put it out there... your skill really does back up your name. You kill it.
JayCeeOh: Thank you. Thank you. I'll do the bottle service spots to get that cake, but at the same time I'll put out a track like that go off track-- the 12 DJ posse cut at the end of Super 7 Volume 3. I was just gonna get a couple of my homies on it from up in Vancouver [Canada]. We just sent it out to see if people wanted to get on it. It was done in a matter of like two days.
