DJ Splyce Interview

Recorded live at DJcity on The MikiDz Show - Monday, Feb 15, 2010.

Dainjazone: Here's a brief introduction on Splyce. He spun the 06' Grammy Celebration; LA Magazine "2006 DJ Of The Year"; has done parties with Janet Jackson, Lindsay Lohan, Kim Kardashian; DJs all over Hollywood and around the country; and is the only DJ to be on Larry King Live. We are definitely happy to have you on.
MikiWAR: So you having fun?

Splyce: I was so nervous, I got a little tipsy before the show. I'm feeling a little loose!

Dainjazone: I want you to put everyone on about Hollywood. You've been doing it for a while. A lot of guys ask if we can get them out here to spin and I tell them we have a hundred DJs out here. It's oversaturated. Its not that easy.
Splyce: I wouldn't say it's oversaturated, but there are a lot of DJs that want to do the Hollywood scene. I think there's a mix of everything. There's a lot of talented people and there are people who are still learning and on their way. I've gotten to listen to a lot of DJs around the country and around the world. There's a lot of talent out there.

Dainjazone: What was your stepping stone to getting to the Larry King and everything after that?
Splyce: The biggest thing was probably the residencies. If you do certain spots on certain nights, people start to take notice. The hardest part is getting to that point. Once in you're in those places, doors start opening.

Dainjazone: Do you feel it's easier to make a name for yourself now as opposed to when you were on wax?
Splyce: I think it's the complete opposite. It's harder now to make a name because the music industry has gone down and it's cheaper to be a DJ. When I started ten years ago, I was buying doubles of every record and sometimes more just in case something happened to that one special record. Now it's a lot easier to get music.

Dainjazone: What person or group of people helped put you on?
Splyce: Growing up in LA, listening to radio DJs... then moving out to Syracuse, NY... I had a college radio show with DJ Komar and DJ AA. They had a big influence on me. DJ NVM and Wicked taught me about house music. I came back to LA and a guy named DJ Cobra introduced me to Stonerokk, and Stone helped open a lot of doors for me when I was getting started in the Hollywood scene.

MikiWAR: Where do you see yourself going from here?
Splyce: Production is definitely a big thing in my mind buggin me, "come on man... start doing it". So what I've been doing is bothering a lot of big producers with a million questions... trying to learn what they do. But definitely have my hands involved in a lot of things. I'm part owner of a restaurant in Dallas called Hacienda on Henderson. Great Mexican food.

Dainjazone: And you also own a Subway in Glendale JC?
Splyce: It's in Valencia at College of the Canyons.

Dainjazone: What cities do you love going to?
Splyce: Las Vegas is definitely #1. Everyone in the country goes there to lose their mind, have fun, and try not to remember anything they did. I've been to different cities that I love to go too. Modesto, Santa Barbara, Cancun... Everwhere is fun. It is what you make of it.
