DJ Revolution Interview

Recorded live at DJcity on The MikiDz Show - Monday, May 24, 2010.

Dainjazone: What happen with you and the Wake Up Show? We know you have your issues with Power 106.
Revolution: Several reasons; 1. I don't like what has happened to the station and I really don't want to affiliate myself with what they're playing on the air. You don't hear me on there anymore. I don't mind playing that and I don't mind that music. Everyone likes their own particular genre of music. If that's what they turn into, that's coo. That's not what's written on the back of my jersey. I'm not on that team. The Wake Up Show still wants to be on that station because the station is allowing them to play good music one hour a week. That's pathetic, but hey, thanks for the hour. People can still tune in and hear people like Dynamix that are holding it down and that really have skills. They want to come up, so there's an outlet for them. I don't get any fun out of that because I know what's going on. There's a small amount of appreciation for that on the station and the general population that listens to the station. That's not for me. I got no bad blood with anyone over there. I'm coo with everyone.

MikiWAR: Who are some of your favorite guys to cut with or just to listen to cut?
Revolution: I don't really cut with anybody. I don't have sessions with anybody. I don't have a DJ crew. I get exposed to a lot of different DJs while traveling around the world, but I'm never in a spot where I'm not learning from someone, even if they're wack. But, I don't really cut with anybody. I'm self taught. I taught myself everything I know by studying masters like Jazzy Jeff, Cash Money, Aladdin and even on down to right now. I'm listening to people now, soaking up that new shit. Like I said, I don't really have anybody I cut with, but if they're at my studio then we'll have a session. I don't call anybody and ask to have a session. When you do that, you sound like the crew. You have the crew identity in your sound. I closed myself up so I would have my own identity.

Dainjazone: Speaking of the crew, you were once affiliated with The Specialist. I'm gathering that wasn't exactly a crew?
Revolution: Well, it is a crew. I guess you can use that term loosely. It's just a bunch of cool DJs that are working towards the same cause; putting on shows, doing mixtapes... I'm down with it. My man Sketch is a hip hop dude; he's a good DJ, he knows his shit, he puts a good energy into the world. So, I'm going to role with him to his events and we can do what ever we want. I'm down with that brand but me and Sketch aint getting up to have cutting sessions at the crib. (haha) if somebody happens to be there as we just shooting the shit, we'll cut it up.

Dainjazone: When was the last time you cut with Spinbad?
Revolution: Man it's been a long time since I cut with Spinbad. You mean since the last time I cut his ass to shreds on my album? (room laughs) We do those pieces so we can have these jokes. If there is one dude I can say is like my twin, my evil robotic counter part, that would be him because me and him, we think alike. When it comes to DJing. We have a similar style of how we do things and how we lay things down. The dude is incredible and I tell him all the time he is like my equal. We never really played at a gig as a team. We got one coming up though. It's going to be in Salt Lake City.

MikiWAR: It's so funny you say that because we went down the line and really couldn't think of anyone to transition from Spinbad other than yourself. Spinbad held it down and we were trying to think who is at that caliber and we chose you.
Revolution: I appreciate that. I just love playing good music. This is what i would be playing late night in my studio anyways.

Dainjazone:You recently put out a club mix. What made you do that?
Revolution: Because I want people to know that I'm not just Mr. Hip Hop. Being Hip Hop means being able to change and adapt and growing with the culture. I don't just play hip hop. When I go to the clubs I play some of that electro stuff because I like it. Some of this stuff is good in the club. There is a time and place for everything. You don't play like Rock The Bells when you're chillin on the couch with your chick. I'm a DJ. I play everything. I'm diverse in my selection. People put me in the hip hop box. Sometimes I have to stay there.

MikiWAR: Are you still using a midi controller?
Revolution: Yea but I didn't bring it today. I use it to control the effects and loops. Without it, I feel a little handcuffed. That thing frees up my hands to do other things. I can focus on the mix when all I have to do is press a button and I don't have to go back to my computer to do anything. It was easy to use a midi controller with Torq, but Serato has really stepped up their game and that's why I'm back on it. M-Audio kind of dropped the ball in that field. If you're not going to stand behind your product, then I'm not.
