DJ Cheapshot Interview

MikiWAR: We know DJ Cheapshot and some may know the producer, but you do a lot of TV and movie stuff...
Cheapshot: Yes! That's what I do now. Vin Skully, the other producer of Styles Of Beyond (S.O.B.) and Fort Minor and I have a company called Bridge Compositions. We do music for TV, films and commercials. I'm sure you've seen Sarah Marshall and you could be the nine thousandth person who has said that same joke about that guy making the t.v. show stuff.

Dainjazone: How was the BBQ? Who showed up?
Cheapshot: The BBQ was amazing! Eric D-Lux, Skratchy, Ryu of (S.O.B.), The Get Busy Committee...

Dainjazone: Was it as average as you thought it would be?
Cheapshot: I thought it was going to be a lot shittier, but it was good. I cooked the whole time because I'm very uncomfortable in conversational situations. So, I stuck myself on the grill and I'd say, "Hey what up man! Go sit down and I'll cook you a burger," and then I didn't talk to anybody (room laughs). I think everyone had a good time. I don't know. It looked that way.

MikiWAR: You can flip it on them later by saying, "You didn't talk to me asshole!" (room laughs)
Cheapshot: Haha exactly! I blame it on them for not being social, but it was my fault. It was a good time. Thank you for asking.

Dainjazone: In your Vimeo video, you were talking about how you are just another average joe, yet better than everyone. Please break that down for us.
Cheapshot: It was actually the directors idea because he thinks I'm the best DJ ever, but he doesn't know anything because he is from Eagle Rock (that's another part of Los Angeles for all you Japanese people watching this on video right now). He said, "Let's do this video because this is how I perceive you." I said, "awesome! Let's do it!" It just became what it is. I don't know. In my head, I think I'm cooler than I am. So everything in my head was put in the video. It did a lot better than I thought. For Vimeo, 20 views is a lot of views.

MikiWAR: How has the transition been from touring with S.O.B. and Fort Minor to New Kids On The Block (NKOTB)? There's a major difference in the crowd right?
Cheapshot: Generally, a hardcore fan is a hardcore fan. Like Dainjazone for example: He's into Ginuwine. He was front row and center at the Ginuwine concert and he's hardcore about Ginuwine; he knows his birthday, next shows; he was at the three shows in Jersey, the whole thing. NKOTB fans are just as hardcore as the next hardcore fan, the only difference is they've been hardcore fans since they were five. Now they're thirty-five and they are still just as hardcore. It's been very weird for me. Whether you listened to my set or not, I'm a hardcore hip hop fan. I come from the hip hop background and lived and breathed hip hop for so long. I would have never thought I would be DJing for NKOTB and talking over Tevin Campbell while talking about NKOTB (haha). It's been exciting. The tour has been top notch. I've met a lot of cool people and they're actually really cool guys, but you know, who would have thought. They had a sold out cruise and that was fun...

MikiWAR: Echo and Eric Cubiche were there, right?
Cheapshot: Echo and Cubiche, who was the drunkest man! I am Sober McGillucuddy compared to Eric Cubiche. That dude knows how to drink a beer and other stuff. OB-One also came this year. Skratchy went last year.

MikiWAR: Any up coming projects we should know about?
Cheapshot: I scored a new TV show for BET called Drama. I composed the music. Roselyn Sanchez from Rush Hour 2, Mario and Russell, the winner of So You Think You Can Dance, judge kids to become the cast of a new version of Romeo And Juliet. Other then that, keep checking soundcloud.com/djcheapshot. There's free mixes and you can get stuff on there. Twitter me @djcheapshot.
