MikiWAR: Let's start right off the bat... Portland... born and raised right?
Evil One: Born and raised. Best city in the world. Go Blazers!
MikiWAR: So why the move?
Evil One: I wanted to advance my DJ career and I did all that I can do in Portland. So, I wanted to try myself in a bigger market. Worst idea ever! No I’m just playin’.
Dainjazone: Now that you’re in LA, you have Twin Tuesdays at The Dime. How has that been going and tell us where it was at the beginning and where it is now.
Evil One: Steve1der and I decided to do a night that was fun; play good music. It grew organically. We didn’t even do a flyer for the first year. I feel like a lot of DJs like to come and play because it’s a fun night.
MikiWAR: Speak on the difference between the scene and the music curve?
Evil One: I think one of the main things is in Portland the nightlife really only cracks about two or three nights a week. So, you don’t have the opportunity to do a Tuesday or a Sunday. There’s just not the industry for it. I think being out here, it pushes you to stay fresh, current and brush up on the old stuff.
Dainjazone: You have your own DJ agency. How’s that going for you?
Evil One: It’s good. The industry has changed a lot in the last couple of years, so constantly trying to adapt and stay relevant is the number one struggle for DJs.
Dainjazone: Are you trying to get your guys in the top 40 market as well?
Evil One: Absolutely. When I first started DJing I was an underground hip hop DJ. Then I realized I wanted to pay my mortgage, have a car, and have clean clothes, so I started to play top 40. To be a well polished DJ today you have to be able to play all of that.
MikiWAR: Let’s talk about Twitter...
Evil One: Shout out to Steve1der. He loves my Twitter game. He said I’m one of his best friends in real life and one of his worst enemies on Twitter.
MikiWAR: Haha. You broke down a four hour gig over Twitter; you play good sh#t for an hour, then bullsh#t for two hours, and then black out. Do you want to educate the kids on how to open?
Evil One: I think the best way to tell if a DJ is dope or not is to see how he/she opens. If I walk in the club and the DJ is playing straight top 40 heat early on, I think, “Ok. So that's all you know.” You have to warm people up. For instance by playing stuff people haven’t heard in a long time and also stuff that you yourself like. If you like top 40 music, then play it and represent you. The first hour should be representing yourself, set the vibe and later play “Shots”.
MikiWAR: Those DJs that don’t know, they could have been a victim of the infamous "USB pull"?
Evil One: That could happen.
MikiWAR: I remember reading this over Twitter and I was thinking, “you have to be kidding me that you do this,” but do you?
Evil One: Maybe. It might have happened.
MikiWAR: How many times?
Evil One: A few.
