MikiWAR: What was the reason for the change in name?
Miles: Just reinventing myself. I was Hella Miles when I was eighteen. I just needed to grow out of it. There’s no real deep meaning behind it.
MikiWAR: Is that your real name?
Miles: Yea, that’s my real name. People were convincing me to change it to my real name, but I said that’s such a “housey” name. I didn’t want to, but I just went with it.
MikiWAR: Will it evolve into some production?
Miles: Oh definitely! I produce right now, but I suck, so when I get better I’ll start releasing stuff.
Dainjazone: Do you compare and contrast yourself and the DJs from the Bay to the Power 106 DJs from LA?
Miles: I love the Power DJs. Every time I come out here, I always turn the radio on because everyone out here is so sick. I don’t compare myself to anybody. I’m a fan of all you LA DJs.
Dainjazone: Way to play it safe. Haha. Have you ever been involved in a DMC competition level?
Miles: Yea. I started entering battles when I was fourteen or fifteen. That’s all I was doing for a while when I was a kid. I did that for a couple years and then I got out of it. I’m still a fan. I still watch it. I’m not too competitive when it comes to DJing. I more so appreciate other DJs instead of competing.
MikiWAR: With that being said, should you have won the Beezo Battle?
Miles: NO! (room laughs) Let's not talk about this!
MikiWAR: I tried to get that out of you! Overall, how did you feel about the Beezo Battle experience?
Miles: It was fun. I didn’t want to do it, but Panic City told me to do it. Dynamix killed it. So did Asis. I really wanted to come into that battle purely as a mix DJ and not be competitive. If I tried to win that, I would have went more battle style, but I didn’t want to come off as a straight battle DJ. So I just did it for the fun. Shout out to Enrie…Henry. Haha. The Beezo Battle is going to come to the Bay soon.
Dainjazone: Since you have this unique battle style, what is your thought process when you put these battle sets together?
Miles: I go for the energy. For the Beezo Battle, it was so last minute. I pretty much sat in my room and started mixing records that I like and were high energy. When I was done, it was twenty minutes long. I had to cut it down to seven minutes, so I hand-picked my favorite tracks. I probably left a bunch of stuff out, but I wanted to make sure there was a pretty good flow throughout my set. I’m pretty happy with my set. I didn’t really do it to win. I did it just to do it and I have no regrets.
MikiWAR: Have you seen any reaction from being a runner-up as far as Twitter love and raw comments?
Miles: Of course! Yea, everyone is going to have his or her opinion. Dynamix and I have totally different styles. Of course I’m going to get that. Same as the prelim when Kidd Spin and I spun. I’m sure he got the same reaction. "Ahh you should have won Kidd. This guy sucks." That’s the thing about open format battles, you have two different styles going against each other, which is such a cool thing. Like I said, I didn’t do it to win. I haven’t broken into this market. LA is a different beast.
MikiWAR: Do you feel you are under the radar?
Miles: I don’t know. I don’t like to pay attention to that because it makes me nervous. A couple days ago, people were telling me that people have been watching me. DJs I look up to have been hitting me up. It’s really cool. I don’t get caught up in it. I’m just doing it because I love doing this.
Dainjazone: Phenom wants to know where the Wild 94.9 podcast is going to go?
Miles: Erock and I switched stations. It’s now Club 997. Go to djerock.podomatic.com. We post every week and it’s a breathe of fresh air because we go real club heavy and we don’t worry about playing what’s hot on the radio. We just do our thing.
