Risk One Interview

Dainjazone: Do you feel DJing on the Royal Caribbean Cruise ship took you to another level?
Risk One: I really think you have to be a well-rounded DJ to do the cruises because you have families; fifty-year-olds, sixteen-year-olds, and every age in the in between. Plus, you you're doing club gigs, pool parties, teaching scratch lessons to kids, and opening up for the magic shows with house music and people staring at you. It took me out of my comfort zone as far as a DJ, but it made me a better DJ.

MikiWAR: You were one and done right?
Risk One: Yea. It’s hard to be gone that long. It was amazing and like a paid vacation. I would for sure do it over again, but at the same time, the day I came back, I had a month long stack of mail, five thousand text messages and voice mails. I had to catch up and get back to speed since I didn’t have internet. Then you’re trying to catch up on the club scene and finding out what is hot.

MikiWAR: You’re in San Francisco now. You’re originally from...
Risk One: I was born in Denver, but I’m from Seattle. Lived there for fifteen years. I’ve been bouncing back and forth between there and Vegas for the last three years. I just bounced out of Seattle to live in San Francisco.

MikiWAR: Why San Francisco?
Risk One: It’s just a dope city. That’s the only city that I’ve gone to and every time I get there I say, ‘I love this place and I would move here today.’ I said that the first time I played down there and I finally made the move.

MikiWAR: Other than San Francisco, where are the other places you like to play?
Risk One: I’m in San Diego a lot. I love San Diego. I actually get a lot of love in the midwest. They know how to get down for sure. I go to the east coast every now and then.

Dainjazone: What about Canada?
Risk One: Oh boy! How much time you got? (room laughs) The whole story is on my website djriskone.com. Basically I had three gigs lined up in Canada: Two in Vancouver- Wednesday and Friday- and one in Ottawa on Saturday. My Friday gig fell through. Two days before the gig the promoters lost the venue so they called me on Wednesday saying, “yo we don’t have a gig for you on Friday. “ I ended up rearranging my schedule and changing flights. I came back from Canada to do my Vegas gigs and instead of going from Vancouver to Ottawa, I went from Vegas to Ottawa. When I got to Ottawa, I didn’t have my work permit. I tried to say I was visiting the homie. I didn’t have any gear on me; no needles, records and head phones. I just had my laptop. They asked me, “You flew all the way from Las Vegas for two days just to hang out with your boys?” I said, ‘Yea!’ Dude started going through all my stuff. Opened up my laptop: opened up the program I send my newsletter on and bam! My June newsletter: Mini Canada Tour. He asked, “So you’re a DJ?” I said, “Yea….as a hobby.” (room laughs) They weren’t buying it. They took my laptop, phone and went through all my stuff. They held for about five hours: sitting in the immigration office. At midnight, they sent me back to the states.

MikiWAR: So make sure you have your work permit because Canada is no joke!

Dainjazone: Did you have to pay for that flight home?

Risk One: I lost all sorts of money on that trip: changing my flights and I didn’t get the money for the gig. It was an overall loss.

Dainjazone: Anything positive you want to talk about to get your vibes in the right direction? (room laughs)
Risk One: I had a bananas Fourth of July down in San Diego. Vice was playing at Hard Rock. There was a big ass bottle of patron flowing like water. You know how that goes.
