Mr. Choc Interview - Season 2

Dainjazone: What’s new in Mr. Choc’s world?
Mr. Choc: I’m the Director of the Scratch DJ Academy here in Los Angeles. We have a new semester starting September 11th, so to all you DJs that want to get your bars up and get your mixes right, hit me up. I’m still doing Soul Assassin Radio with Muggs... having a good time with that. I do Little Temple every Friday in Silver Lake, Carbon every Wednesday with Byze One and Babu in Culver City.

Dainjazone: All right next question. Miki jump into it! Go!
Mr.Choc: Jump into? That means it’s going to be something with drama! Bring it!

MikiWAR: How was the transitioning process out of Power 106?
Mr. Choc: I will be honest, when I first left Power 106, it was hard. I spent 11 years there. I asked myself, 'What am I going to do next? Do I work at another radio station?' After you work at Power 106, it’s really hard to make the decision to go to another radio station. I was getting some offers from smaller markets out of the city, but I didn’t want to leave LA. To me LA is the best city in the world. I stayed here, toughed it out and fell into some things. I’m still having a good time and I still love what I do. What else do you want to talk about because you are looking at me like, “Come on Choc, answer the question!”

MikiWAR: Well, was the departure on your own terms?
Mr. Choc: I’ll say it like this: we left on good terms. The thing that I loved about leaving Power is getting to do a last show. Nobody gets to do a last show. I was blessed because I was able to get a last show to say goodbye to the listeners and the fans. I am forever grateful to Power 106 for that. They provided that platform for me to perform on. Without Power 106 no one would know who Mr. Choc is. I’m pretty sure a few people would know, but not to the level it is now. I just went back to do a set in March for my birthday. Felli Fel asked me to come back and rock.

MikiWAR: Is there any itch to go back to radio?
Mr. Choc: No. If something comes up, looks and sounds right, then I’m with it. For the most part, I’m good. I’m having fun right now. I’m having more fun than I’ve had in a long time.

Dainjazone: What is it about now that makes things more fun?
Mr. Choc: I get to do what I want! I don’t have the restrictions I had at Power 106. Today I was thinking ‘I have to do the Mikidz Show tonight. What am I going to play? Everybody plays electro and house. Maybe I should do an electro and house set since no one has seen me do that.’ Nah! Everybody does electro and house. Let me go and do what I do; hip hop, breaks and funk. I do house and electro too, but I’m not trippin’ on it like that. I have an 18 year old son who is making house and electro tracks. My son is taking over.

MikiWAR: Is it Lil Choc? What’s his DJ name?
Mr. Choc: He’s trying to figure it out. He wants to be something dope. Him and C-Minus’s son do production together.

Dainjazone: What’s your travel been like?
Mr. Choc: I went to Norway earlier this year. That was cold as hell. Hell isn’t cold, but it was cold. I’ve been in Miami and Utah…

Dainjazone: You’re missing a big night in New York right now.
Mr. Choc: I had to stay because of the Scratch DJ Academy and I had already booked this show through Miki. I wasn’t going to leave ya’ll hanging… Even though there is no money in this! But, I’m still going to come and represent!

MikiWAR: We have plenty of cold water… (room laughs)
Mr. Choc: If I were still drinking, I’d be drinking with ya’ll. I’m five months sober. I wish I had done it years ago. I feel more focused and as you can see, I’m a little more in shape.

Dainjazone: P90x?
Mr. Choc: No! The gym. Eating right. No lap bands. No operations. I just wanted to get my mind and body right. It’s about to be Choc Diesel in a minute son! I’m happy about my health right now so I have to shout it out.
