MikiWAR: We got the Eh! Team DJs. Who’s in the crew?
Hedspin: There are seven of us; Pump from Calgary, Team Canada (Grandtheft and D.R. One) from Montreal, Jr. Flo (Keys N Crates) from Toronto, Illo from Ottawa and we just recently added Drastik from Ottawa. Drastik recently won the Redbull 3style Battle in Canada.
Dainjazone: Who put the team together together?
Hedspin: Team Canada did about four years ago. This happened when they got signed to Deckstar. They got busy traveling around the US and they needed to fill some gigs in Canada because they were in demand. So, they started a crew.
MikiWAR: How many guys competed in the 3style Battle?
Hedspin: Drastik, Pump and myself.
MikiWAR: How did all that go?
Hedspin: Good! I competed three years ago. It wasn’t as big as it is now. There was no Canadian or world final. I just did it so I can prove to myself that I can battle and I ended up winning.
MikiWAR: How often do you guys come to the US?
Hedspin: This is probably my third time. We’ve never done a real run of the US.
MikiWAR: Is there a master plan for a US tour?
Hedspin: Eventually. We’re just trying to make a name for ourselves and connect with the right people, which I feel we’ve done.
MikiWAR: Is it as tough to get into the US as it is to get in to Canada?
Hedspin: We were actually worried we weren’t going to make it because our work visas didn’t come through in time. We were booked in Oakland to play an all 45s party and I was going to bring records across the border. Our visas didn’t come through in time so I ended up FedEx’ing them to Oakland over night. I ended up paying $150, which isn’t too bad. Just brought my laptop and head phones. When I got to customs they asked, “what do you do for a living?” I said, “I’m a DJ. To tell you the truth I’m going on vacation,” and they let me through.
I think every DJ from the US has a story on having a hard time getting into Canada. If you get the paper work done it doesn’t take too long.
MikiWAR: How often do you get to play sets like you did today?
Hedspin: I’ve been pretty selective of the gigs I get in Canada so I get to rock like that regularly.
MikiWAR: What’s the scene like in Canada right now?
Hedspin: I think we should pass this one to Pump. What’s it like in Canada?
Pump: Canada is ill. I like Canada. (room laughs).
Hedspin: I feel like you can be more open with music. The smaller towns aren’t over saturated with DJs. We get an out of town DJ everyday so they’re with you. They don’t take it for granted.
MikiWAR: Atrak is a well-known DJ in Canada. With him doing his style of indie/electro/disco house at Fools Gold, does that capture the interest of people in Canada?
Hedspin: For sure . We’re definitely on top of it when it comes to that type of music.
Jayceeoh: Canada gets it cracking, man! I love it!
Hedspin: Jayceeoh is there all the time.
MikiWAR: Any projects coming up?
Hedspin: I got a couple mix projects in the works. I just did a Rakim mix. http://www.ehteamdjs.blogspot.com
