MikiWAR: You’ve been a mixer for Wild 94.9 for how long?
J.: For about nine years. I recently became an on-air personality. I do fill-ins and a weekend shift.
MikiWAR: What’s the difference between an on-air personality and DJing?
J.: Just talking on the radio and mixing. I don’t think I have a great personality, but I guess my boss does.
MikiWAR: Was there any pressure for you to get on the mic and talk about random stuff like we do?
J.: No we don’t get to do that. They tell us, “ You have six seconds to talk in between Enrique Iglesias and Usher.” At first I was real intimidated about talking on the radio because I didn’t have a lot of confidence in myself. Since I’ve been doing it more I’ve been getting the hang of it and it’s actually pretty fun. I’m looking forward to doing it more.
Dainjazone: You’re 27 years old, DJing for nine years now. You’ve been with the radio station for how long?
J.: Since I was 17. I’ve been DJing since I was 14. In a nutshell, somebody stole a mixtape I did and almost got on the radio with that mix. The radio station found out it was me so I ended up getting a guest spot every Friday at midnight. I used to be on this morning show called The Dog House. It was pretty big show in the bay area. That was my big break.
MikiWAR: How current are you on making edits these days?
J.: I’m not really into the whole mashup thing or blends. If I’m going to do a blend I’ll end up doing it live. Occasionally, I’ll throw some stuff together. There are some dudes that are really doing dope mashups like Victor Menegaux and DJ Phase. They still make tight s***.
