Dainjazone: Seems like every big name DJ caught a break somewhere. Tell us how you came up?
Skeet: I was a producer first. I played punk music in hardcore bands my whole life. When I was sixteen I moved to LA, but there wasn’t a very good hardcore scene. I decided to buy music production software and tried to make music. I was making bad drum n bass. From that I tried to figure out what sound I wanted to make, I stumbled into 90s IDM, that led to filter house, then two-step and a lot of the UK stuff. I enjoyed playing house music. There was a euro-cheese scene for house music in LA, which was cool, but that’s not what I was into.
Long story short, I’ve always been playing house here and there. My nickname has always been Skeeter and I thought it would be funny if I called myself Skeet Skeet. I was the only guy playing house amongst a certain group of people. Then Daft Punk did Cochella and everyone wanted a house DJ in LA. I kept playing, people kept booking me and here I am today; in Culver City, playing cumbia for a bunch of people on the internet (room laughs).
MikiWAR: Do you think the indie/electro wave that has taken over the last couple of years has helped your brand grow?
Skeet: I don’t know! People always ask me, “How do you brand yourself so well? What are your tricks?” I don’t know! I don’t think I have any. I’m just a nerd. My friends that didn’t have jobs and were losers and I would sit on iChat in chat rooms. We’d send dumb YouTube and messed up porno videos to each other. We would think it was really funny. I thought it would be fun to make a blog to put all the videos on so all my friends could look at them. I would send it to a couple friends and they would show their friends. So it became this index of stupid videos. Then people would ask, “ How did you get your blog so popular?” I don’t know! I just like stupid stuff and people do to. As the general population gets dumber they just fall down to my level (room laughs).
MikiWAR: And that’s how you get 24,000 followers people.
Skeet: I don’t even understand half of that. I think the blog has something to do with it. I guess my friends think I’m funny because I post pictures of my friend taking a sh*t at Pauly Shore’s house. Pauly Shore retweets me and his friends say, “whoa, who is this weirdo with skeetonmytwit’s for a name….?”
MikiWAR:…Who has a friend who takes sh*ts in Pauly’s bathroom….
Skeet: Actually, in his dryer. We keep it real live.
MikiWAR: Did you turn it on afterwards?
Dainjazone: Hot sh*t?
Skeet: Yea that’s what it is. I actually played the Nelly sample. I had it cued.
MikiWAR: Have you recently done anything with Shwayze? Are you going to do anything?
Skeet: Yea those are my dudes! We all started doing solo stuff. I started focusing more on producing. I got this Chris Brown cut and all this other pop stuff going on. I started focusing on being at home and having a little bit of a normal life. Cisco started producing a bunch of stuff. He’s got this whole deal on his solo stuff and he’s also a talented songwriter. Having him home is nice because we’ll get to make music.
Shwayze is doing his thang. He has this Aaron Smith project which is really cool. I think its aaronsmithmusic.com. Everyone is growing up. Shwayze just got married and is having a baby. I’m still a loser trying to find a girlfriend in Koreatown.
Dainjazone: The first time I saw you play was a couple years ago at Banana Split. Do you get a chance to play that kind of music outside of LA?
Skeet: I’m notorious for playing whatever I want. I like f**king Miley Cyrus...
MikiWAR: You mean her music or like really f**king her?
Skeet: Well I like both (room laughs). That wasn’t legal until a few weeks ago. (room laughs). I like sh*tty, awful pop music like that. I play everything and I think that has been an asset for me. If you go see Deadmau5 you know what he’s going to play. If you go see Rusko you know what he’s going to play. If you go see me everyone is like “whaaat? Play your Tik Tok Remix,” and I’m like “Oh yea! Sorry!” If I had it my way I’d still be playing in a hardcore band, but that requires too much effort and a bunch of idiots, so DJing is the next best thing.(room laughs).
Dainjazone: How often do you play in LA?
Skeet: I really don’t play in LA, but I do throw a party called Mega. It’s a little more sporadic now. My whole deal with that party is to get a bunch of ignorant black kids in a room and play them minimal-techno (room erupts in laughter). I get a warehouse, have an open bar, a dope rapper like Dom Kennedy, Lil B or whoever I want, have them bring all their homies and play Mario Brothers records for an hour. N**gas f*ck with it though because its just 808s.
