J. Espinosa Interview

MikiWAR: You’ve been a mixer for Wild 94.9 for how long?
J.: For about nine years. I recently became an on-air personality. I do fill-ins and a weekend shift.

MikiWAR: What’s the difference between an on-air personality and DJing?
J.: Just talking on the radio and mixing. I don’t think I have a great personality, but I guess my boss does.

MikiWAR: Was there any pressure for you to get on the mic and talk about random stuff like we do?
J.: No we don’t get to do that. They tell us, “ You have six seconds to talk in between Enrique Iglesias and Usher.” At first I was real intimidated about talking on the radio because I didn’t have a lot of confidence in myself. Since I’ve been doing it more I’ve been getting the hang of it and it’s actually pretty fun. I’m looking forward to doing it more.

Dainjazone: You’re 27 years old, DJing for nine years now. You’ve been with the radio station for how long?
J.: Since I was 17. I’ve been DJing since I was 14. In a nutshell, somebody stole a mixtape I did and almost got on the radio with that mix. The radio station found out it was me so I ended up getting a guest spot every Friday at midnight. I used to be on this morning show called The Dog House. It was pretty big show in the bay area. That was my big break.

MikiWAR: How current are you on making edits these days?
J.: I’m not really into the whole mashup thing or blends. If I’m going to do a blend I’ll end up doing it live. Occasionally, I’ll throw some stuff together. There are some dudes that are really doing dope mashups like Victor Menegaux and DJ Phase. They still make tight s***.

Adam 12 Interview

MikiWAR: People know you most for a couple things: She Wants Revenge and your club night AFEX. How did AFEX come about?
Adam: I did a club in the early 90’s called Afex. Afex was at a club in Hollywood called Carlos And Charlies, which is on Sunset, near Crescent Heights. It was ill hip hop all night. Cut to a couple years ago, no one, in my opinion was doing it right. People do throwback nights…. I have a problem with some old hip hop, but I like most of it. People do throwback parties and they tend to do ironic stuff for ironic sake. So you’ll hear a lot of funny stuff like Digital Underground and Rob Base. This is their idea of classics for people who don’t know hip hop very well.

I just did it because honestly, I couldn’t go anywhere to hear it. I said, “F*** it! I’m going to do my own night and play dope s*** all night and everybody that likes it can come." I didn’t know if anybody was going to come or not. I figured if we had good guests people would come. Then every DJ wanted to spin there. From Large Professor to AM. It’s DJs-that-know-hip-hop's favorite place to play because the people that go there respect old hip hop to the point where you can pretty much play anything and get away with it. People will go crazy. You don’t find that often. Nowadays especially to be a competitive DJ you have to do a bunch of crappy clubs and you don’t get to play anything you want to play.

MikiWAR: Where does the name AFEX come from?
Adam: When I did the original AFEX, the guys who I did it with made t-shirts, buttons, and flyers. They were these two knuckleheads from the rich side of the valley, so they had money to make the shirts. The name comes from the line “they want EFX”: The Das EFX song. So they made the shirts, brought them back, and the shirts said “AFEX”. I guess it was my bad for not telling them the correct spelling.

Dainjazone: I’m sure you enjoyed all the sets at AFEX, but which sets stood out to you?
Adam: D-Nice was dope because he is from that era. He was fourteen or fifteen following BDP so he knows that era well. There’s a difference between those who emulate what you think was happening back then and those who actually played all this music because they knew what went together. They had a better understanding of how to play it rather than being an iPod (for lack of a better word). Older dudes like D-Nice are thinking about a beginning, a middle, and an end in their set.

All of AM sets were always amazing because he was one of the best guys on his feet. He would be figuring out ill mixes just by knowing songs so well. The BladeRunners, Spinderella, and Mike B are always dope.

Dainjazone: With your hip hop background, why didn’t you become a hip hop producer as opposed to the style of music you portray in She Wants Revenge?
Adam: The other guy in my band is Justin Warfield. He was an MC in the early 90s. He was doing The Pharcyde stuff before they were doing it. He was a forward thinker, worked with Prince Paul and QD3. QD3 produced his first record. When we’re out and we bump into people like Questlove, Black Thought or Tip, they’ll say, ”Yo! Your first album was my s***!” It’s crazy how much respect he gets till this day when people find out he’s Justin Warfield.

I’ve produced all kinds of stuff; from hip hop in the 90s to working with female vocalist. When Justin and I hooked up we were supposed to make hip hop together. We were making beats to slang for the longest. Kenna asked me to make a beat for her second record. Justin heard the beat and asked, “What is that?!” It wasn’t like the stuff Justin and I were doing. I told him it was for Kenna and he told me.” Don’t give it to Kenna (room laughs). Before you send it, let me play guitar over it and sing on it." At the time I was talking to this real super gothic chick. The song was about a girl I liked and a girl he liked. I played it for her and she said it was dope. I didn’t tell her it was about her because it was dark and whatever. I called Justin and said we have to do another one. Then we did a third and a fourth. I was really just trying to impress this girl, but we took a step back and said, “There’s something to be said about these songs. They’re all kind of dope.” We grew up in households filled with different music. As much as we were influenced by hip hop, we were also influenced by the dark wave 80s stuff.

We gave a friend a couple of our songs. He was on Interscope signed under Fred Durst. I told him not to give it to Fred because Fred and I had beef…

MikiWAR: Hmm! That’ll be a follow up question later on (room laughs)
Adam: I toured with Christina Aguilera, which not a lot of people know… I’m surprised I’m telling you this (room laughs). One year we did the MTV awards together. Fred and Christina were forced to do a song together, like a mashup. This is when Limp Bizkit was peaking and was totally disrespecting her. I stepped up to him and said something. Donut, who is Fred’s bodyguard stepped up and I was like, “Ok…its cool (room laughs).”

So I said don’t play it for Fred. My friend said, “Fred has changed. He’s really cool. Let me play it for him. Whether you like him or not, the dude has sold millions of records. So you have to respect him as a businessman. That night, off two songs, Fred called me and wanted to sign us to Interscope right there. We didn’t know if he was trying to make his label look cool or if he really liked the music. What was his angle? So we went and hung out with him for a week and he turned out to be one of the coolest guys. So I said, “We’ll sign with you, but you cant f*** with us. We don’t want an A&R guy. The record is already halfway done, so just let us do our thing.” He was cool with it. We took the money from Interscope and built our dream studio with it, which we still have, even though we’re not on Interscope anymore. Fred came in the studio once and was like, "I like that. I like that. I don’t like that. I'm not going to tell you to change it, but here’s my opinion." Very specific, real amazing notes. That was the only time he f***ed with us.

It all happened because this one one guy wanted to play this one song. We were rehearsing for our first show and next door to us was Bowhouse rehearsing for Cochella. I knew one of the guys from the band and I asked them to come in and listen us. He came in with the band and another guy who ended up being from Sirius Satellite. The Sirius guy asked, “Yo! Do you guys have a record?” “Yea we just got them.” “What’s the single? Can I play it?” “We don’t even know… just pick one. Play whatever you want.” The song “Tear You Apart” almost didn’t make the album because we were sick of hearing it. This Sirius guy literally only played it because it’s the only song that says “f***”. He played it on Sirius and no one could have ever imagined that record doing what it did.

Z-Trip Interview

Dainjazone: How long did it take to put that set together?
Z-Trip: There are bits and pieces of it from other sets. The Van Halen / Public Enemy routine is something I’ve been doing for years. I haven’t played that in forever so I thought I’d throw it in the mix. I resurrected some old stuff; whole bunch of new stuff.

MikiWAR: As much as there is dope stuff that does work, how much of it goes out the window?
Z-Trip: There’s a lot man. You come up with so much stuff, but some of it won’t work in front of a crowd or maybe it won’t work in the middle of the two things you’re hoping it will work with. Sometimes I’ll work on something and it’ll be great, but I won’t use it for three years. Then maybe I’ll get back to it and it’ll either rock or be horrible.

Dainjazone: All of November you were working on an album.
Z-Trip: It’s sort of in bits and pieces. It’s actually kind of happening now. For me, the thought process is the first part of a record. I have to sit down and figure out what the hell I want to do rather than banging out beats. I got to have a vision and know where I’m going. If not then I’m just building up my catalog. So, November was just wrapping my head around what it is I want to say. I don’t want to push it. I don’t want to create a deadline and say this is when the record should come out. That’s not the way an organic record should be. And I don’t have a label barking at me. I’m doing it the way I want to do it. I might take another month of brainstorming. I’m slowly working with a couple people, but I will get to the point of knowing what I want to put out.

Dainjazone: You were one of the first, if not THE first to do mashups. In what direction do you see music going?
Z-Trip: I wasn’t the first guy to do mashups. I might be the first guy to be recognized for it. I have this label that follows me around because people identify that kind of sound with a project I did with DJ P and stuff I was doing prior to that. It’s cool and I don’t mind it, but it’s tough because there were other people doing it before me. It’s kind of hard for me to say, “I’m the guy,” and have that title because this is just mixing, man. I don’t give a s#!t about genre, tempo, style… it doesn’t matter to me as long as it’s dope and make me move, I throw it in the mix. That is something Bambaataa, Kool Herc, Jazzy Jay, Flash, and all the elders have been doing for years. I’m just doing what they’ve been doing. I’m not the guy. Talk to Bambaataa. Give him the title (room laughs). I have to put that out there, but if it helps people identify with what I am and what I do, cool.

It’s kind of tough to say where I see music going. The thing that I’m happy about is people let their guard down by playing and accepting all kinds of music without feeling weird. If you like Neil Diamond, you might think, “oh, my friends are going to think I’m weird.” That s*#t is over (room laughs). Not that I like Neil Diamond, I’m just using him as an example (room laughs). When I started DJing people were into all kinds of music and then it got real cliquey. There’s a little bit of that going right now, but there are enough people out there who play all kinds of music and are breaking down barriers.

MikiWAR: How has recent technology evolved your sets throughout time?
Z-Trip: All the new technology represents the next level, whether it be Ableton, Traktor or whatever it is that you’re using. If it works for you and you’re dope on it, do it. I’m from the old days of digging for records. I love and still respect that. I think there are a lot of young people coming up that need that in their repertoire because there’s something important about that. At the same time, it’s not required. There’s no laws to this s*^t. If you’re dope, you’re dope, as long as you keep a little heart and soul in whatever you do.

Dainjazone: Out of all the DJs you’ve seen what DJ has the best live set?
Z-Trip: To me, it doesn’t matter. It’s hard to say one guy is better than the other. I’m a fan of everybody's work. If you’re a master at one craft then that’s the best s^$t ever. It doesn’t have to be mega-technical.

Dainjazone: Who has been your favorite artist to work with?
Z-Trip: That’s another tough question. It’s like you’re asking me, “What’s your favorite song (room laughs)?” I probably like working with some of the legends like Rakim and Chuck D. At the end of the day I’m still a fan. The fact that I was able to do this as a love of what I do, parlay that into a career, and was able to work with all the people I’ve worked with over the years, is just humbling. When I meet someone like Rakim I say, “F*^k … it’s Rakim! (room laughs)” I can recite all the records and it’s not just that; I know all the breaks he used, who produced what, the engineers, and the year they came out. I’m THAT guy. So when I meet somebody like that, I know everything about him up until now. When I work with them I’m going to find out some new s^#t. To be able to meet and be validated by those guys is empowering.

Guest Review: Crane Stand: The Best DJ Laptop/Controller Stand On The Market?

Guest Review
Crane Stand: The Best DJ Laptop/Controller Stand On The Market?
by Phil Morse, editor, Digital DJ Tips (
http://www.digitaldjtips.com/)

If you are a digital DJ who plays in less-than-ideally set up DJ booths, bars, lounges and parties, then having a good stand to put your laptop or DJ controller onto is a given.

Not only will it save your back in long sets, but without a doubt, having your equipment in exactly the right position for you to play from improves your performance. You can keep your eye on the crowd and the controls at the same time, and you can reach everything that much quicker. (And we all know that timing is everything in DJing.)

I'd been looking for a stand for a while, but those I found seemed more like flimsy and over-complicated "corporate" laptop stands - even some of the better musician's ones didn't look very friendly for setting up fast in a dark DJ booth. Either that, or they weren't really very portable.

However, when I was at the BPM Show in England in October (in my position as editor of Digital DJ Tips) I fell in love with one particular type of stand, called the Crane Stand. And while I try and make it a rule not to buy stuff when I'm attending shows for work purposes, despite that there was one of these tucked in my hand luggage on the way home!

So - the fact that I bought one of these and flew out of there with it in my backpack tells you that it's portable and folds down small. But what you don't know yet is just is how gorgeous the design of this stand is.

Made from lightweight aircraft-grade aluminium, and with spot-welding that's guaranteed for life by the tiny Seattle company that makes it, you are always going to feel good pulling one of these out of your bag to set up with.

The stand can be put up in two ways depending on the weight of the equipment you want to put on it, and to be honest I think it could hold anything you're going to want it to. It is adjustable to infinite angles and positions (although only one height), and has no removable parts - it remains one single item, folded or set up. Nothing to lose, nothing to over-complicate things.

It certainly isn't cheap, but if you're going to perch an $800 DJ controller or a $1200 MacBook Pro on one of these, and then go on to use it to perform live from in front of hundreds of people, you're going to want to know it can do the job and that it won't fail on you. This stand definitely can.

And also, to me style is important, and the Crane Stand has that too. You wouldn't DJ off an ugly or badly designed DJ controller or laptop, so why put it on a poor stand? An investment in one of these will pay you back many times over in ease of use, safety, and all-important approving glances from other DJs!

Z-Trip LIVE on the MikiDz Show

This latest season of the MikiDz Show has brought on some very notable guests. We blew the roof off by starting the season with the legendary DJ Qbert. We followed that up with our friends Hedspin & Pump who snuck into the country from Canada and graced us with their north of the border style. Continuing with the tradition of showcasing world class DJs, we brought on DJ Faust and DJ Skeet Skeet for your listening pleasure. Those two rocked sets that every DJ can take notes on. Yes, even if you only spin Top 40!

So who's next on tap you ask?

The MikidZ Show presents DJ Z-Trip gracing his presence in the DJcity.com studio. There is no question that Z-Trip, like the many other DJs that have starred in the show, is an influential performer. His style, mixes, and mashes of genres have arguably labeled him as the creator of the "Mash Up". We are honored to have Z-Trip in our studio LIVE and premiering brand new sets. Skeet Skeet Interview

Dainjazone: Seems like every big name DJ caught a break somewhere. Tell us how you came up?
Skeet: I was a producer first. I played punk music in hardcore bands my whole life. When I was sixteen I moved to LA, but there wasn’t a very good hardcore scene. I decided to buy music production software and tried to make music. I was making bad drum n bass. From that I tried to figure out what sound I wanted to make, I stumbled into 90s IDM, that led to filter house, then two-step and a lot of the UK stuff. I enjoyed playing house music. There was a euro-cheese scene for house music in LA, which was cool, but that’s not what I was into.

Long story short, I’ve always been playing house here and there. My nickname has always been Skeeter and I thought it would be funny if I called myself Skeet Skeet. I was the only guy playing house amongst a certain group of people. Then Daft Punk did Cochella and everyone wanted a house DJ in LA. I kept playing, people kept booking me and here I am today; in Culver City, playing cumbia for a bunch of people on the internet (room laughs).

MikiWAR: Do you think the indie/electro wave that has taken over the last couple of years has helped your brand grow?
Skeet: I don’t know! People always ask me, “How do you brand yourself so well? What are your tricks?” I don’t know! I don’t think I have any. I’m just a nerd. My friends that didn’t have jobs and were losers and I would sit on iChat in chat rooms. We’d send dumb YouTube and messed up porno videos to each other. We would think it was really funny. I thought it would be fun to make a blog to put all the videos on so all my friends could look at them. I would send it to a couple friends and they would show their friends. So it became this index of stupid videos. Then people would ask, “ How did you get your blog so popular?” I don’t know! I just like stupid stuff and people do to. As the general population gets dumber they just fall down to my level (room laughs).

MikiWAR: And that’s how you get 24,000 followers people.
Skeet: I don’t even understand half of that. I think the blog has something to do with it. I guess my friends think I’m funny because I post pictures of my friend taking a sh*t at Pauly Shore’s house. Pauly Shore retweets me and his friends say, “whoa, who is this weirdo with skeetonmytwit’s for a name….?”

MikiWAR:…Who has a friend who takes sh*ts in Pauly’s bathroom….
Skeet: Actually, in his dryer. We keep it real live.

MikiWAR: Did you turn it on afterwards?
Dainjazone: Hot sh*t?

Skeet: Yea that’s what it is. I actually played the Nelly sample. I had it cued.

MikiWAR: Have you recently done anything with Shwayze? Are you going to do anything?
Skeet: Yea those are my dudes! We all started doing solo stuff. I started focusing more on producing. I got this Chris Brown cut and all this other pop stuff going on. I started focusing on being at home and having a little bit of a normal life. Cisco started producing a bunch of stuff. He’s got this whole deal on his solo stuff and he’s also a talented songwriter. Having him home is nice because we’ll get to make music.

Shwayze is doing his thang. He has this Aaron Smith project which is really cool. I think its aaronsmithmusic.com. Everyone is growing up. Shwayze just got married and is having a baby. I’m still a loser trying to find a girlfriend in Koreatown.

Dainjazone: The first time I saw you play was a couple years ago at Banana Split. Do you get a chance to play that kind of music outside of LA?
Skeet: I’m notorious for playing whatever I want. I like f**king Miley Cyrus...

MikiWAR: You mean her music or like really f**king her?
Skeet: Well I like both (room laughs). That wasn’t legal until a few weeks ago. (room laughs). I like sh*tty, awful pop music like that. I play everything and I think that has been an asset for me. If you go see Deadmau5 you know what he’s going to play. If you go see Rusko you know what he’s going to play. If you go see me everyone is like “whaaat? Play your Tik Tok Remix,” and I’m like “Oh yea! Sorry!” If I had it my way I’d still be playing in a hardcore band, but that requires too much effort and a bunch of idiots, so DJing is the next best thing.(room laughs).

Dainjazone: How often do you play in LA?
Skeet: I really don’t play in LA, but I do throw a party called Mega. It’s a little more sporadic now. My whole deal with that party is to get a bunch of ignorant black kids in a room and play them minimal-techno (room erupts in laughter). I get a warehouse, have an open bar, a dope rapper like Dom Kennedy, Lil B or whoever I want, have them bring all their homies and play Mario Brothers records for an hour. N**gas f*ck with it though because its just 808s.

MikiDz Show 1 Year Anniversary & Fire Poo 4

During the off-season, we were honored to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of The MikiDz Show. On Sept 28, 2009 when we had DJ Fashen as our first guest, we never thought that the show would become the well-respected monster that it is today. Every season, every show, every DAY we are constantly trying to come up with new ways to give back to the DJ community and make the show better. Dainjazone and I, MikiWAR, are very blessed to have the opportunity to represent an amazing company like DJcity.

In celebration we did a couple special things. First we gave out custom "Fire Poo x DJcity x MikiDz Show" beer mugs for our good friend DJ Cheapshot's "Fire Poo" DJ get-together. The event was hosted by DJ Vice and Eric D-Lux and sponsored by DJcity.com. Fire Poo is a great event to get away from loud music, eat wings, and drink beer with the occasional karaoke butchering of a 90's pop song by Cheapshot himself.

After Fire Poo we headed over to The Dime in Hollywood where Dainjazone and I had the pleasure to rock alongside our buddies Steve1der and Evil One at their weekly "Twin Tuesdays" party. We played some real hip-hop for a very appreciative crowd. The night involved a lot of great tunes, DJs, and even a "shot" taken by DJ Dainjazone (at the time, the 23rd of his life).
