Big Syphe Interview

Dainjazone: How did you link up with Pitbull? You’ve been touring with him for a while now.
Syphe: I’ve known Pit for almost ten years. Funny story: his mom introduced us in Vegas. I wasn’t even twenty one yet. They had to sneak me into the House Of Blues for a meet n greet with TVT Records. I was chillin at the table with my boy from the Power Street Team. Pit was there with 213 (Snoop, Warren G, Nate Dogg) because they were signed with TVT. There was a lady just chillin. She started talking to us, “Armando (Pitbull) that’s my son...” I told her that I’ve been supporting his records. I was one of the only guys playing his records on Power when I was doing 3am-5am. She wanted me to go meet him, but I couldn’t leave the table because I was underage. E-Man said, “Don’t leave the table because you’re going to get kicked out.” Pit was busy doing his thing, but she brought him over and introduced us. This was before “Culo”, “Toma” and all that. He told me to keep in touch and we’ve been boys ever since.

MikiWAR: Through that growth you’ve grew into the production side of things.
Syphe: I’ve been making beats since high school. I started on the MP-60, then my boys and I heard the SP-1200 was the monster. We bought that, but I didn’t know how to use it. So that’s when I focused on DJing. I was in that little battle circuit.

MikiWAR: Were you Little Syphe then?
Syphe: Haha. No, they gave me that name at Power 106. I was the shortest dude. You know when you’re the littlest dude they call you the big dude, but the ladies (you know what I’m saying) they call me big. Aaaaahhhhh... (room laughs). Where’s Samantha (Padilla)? Come on Samantha help me out... (room laughs). I’m just kidding. That’s my home girl.

MikiWAR: But your sound has developed, right?
Syphe: Yea, I was a sample kid. I looked up to Premier, E-Swift and Quik. When it was easy to get cracked software... Reason was the first thing I got on. That taught me a lot. I’m proud that I came up on the analog side as far as using the MP’s. I used to sample about 6 records. I’d have to get the hi-hat loops or the bass lines and put it in key. I had to make sure my basslines went with my melodies. So when I got into Reason, Logic, and Ableton, it was cake.

Dainjazone: Have you been kicking these beats to Pit?
Syphe: Yea! I actually got a little something right here. I think I’m going to get in trouble. Luckily Pit is anti-technology. Sometimes that boy doesn’t even know how to use his own Blackberry. Haha. Hopefully this won’t get back to him.

Actually this track that I’m playing right now is about two years old. We’re waiting for some big names like Nicki Minaj to get on it. I don’t want to say anything...

MikiWAR: You just said it!
Dainjazone: Have a couple more beers and we’ll talk about it later (room laughs)

Syphe: But you know what! (Whispering to us) He’s not bringing the track out so I’m just gonna...

MikiWAR: Why are you whispering like we’re not going to replay this? (room laughs)
