MikiWAR: You make edits on the road and in the studio. I only have one of your edits and that goes under a different name.
Flipside: My buddy DJ Mark-E and I did that together. We were originally going to be Flipstarz, have a website and do it big. Then I thought let’s just do Flipside and Mark-E and keep pushing that for remixes. We already have a brand with Flipside so let’s ride with that. What we do are side projects from Jump Smokers. Flipstarz came about because there is Flipside and we wanted to use other Philippinos. Then we can say, “Yea! We’re the Flipstarz!”
MikiWAR: Are there other Flipstarz edits?
Flipside: That (Jeremih Birthday Sex edit) was the only one. That one was so big that opening DJs would play it before I would DJ, not realizing that was my edit.
Dainjazone: Do you get upset if DJs play your tracks before you?
Flipside: If the songs are in the show, then yea. When we’re not performing, but hanging out, I love when people play our songs.
MikiWAR: Has that happened before?
Flipside: Oh yea! They don’t get it. They’re just trying to show love, so we embrace it.
Dainjazone: The Jump Smokers have been around for three years now...
Flipside: Actually just a little over two years. We’ve all been friends before that and then we all came together for the “My Flow So Tight (Anti-Breezy) Chris Brown” record, which was bananas. We got millions of hits for that.
Dainjazone: Speaking of which, did Chris Brown hit you guys up after that record?
Flipside: No, but the label did. It was all in good fun… What’s he going to say? He did what he did and he owns up to it. Is he going to beat us up for it? Like that’s going to look good for him. We wanted to show people that we are more than just that record, but that record gave us a break. People heard of us from that record and it gave us a chance to do our real music. We are team Rihanna though (room laughs).
Dainjazone: Any future projects with her?
Flipside: We’ll see. We just did “Russian Roulette” and “Hard” and that was really cool. She didn’t know we were the same people who did “My Flow So Tight”, but she definitely knows now. Haha.
MikiWAR: Is there anybody you haven’t worked with, but you hope to work with?
Flipside: There are always people I would love to work with; Justin Timberlake, Timbo, The Neptunes, Polo... Ryan Leslie is someone I look up to. His YouTube videos are ridiculous. He’s one of the guys that influence me in the studio; his creativity is so amazing. I like working with people that motivate my grind. Ryan Leslie’s grind is ridiculous.
Dainjazone: How often are the Jump Smokers in the studio? You have your radio show and then there’s the traveling.
Flipside: We’re in the studio every week. It depends on when the project come in. If they give us a deadline then we’re up all night. We haven’t had time to work on our upcoming album, but it’s okay because we’re working on remixes, traveling, and promoting our brand of the Jump Smokers.
MikiWAR: Scheduling-wise how does it work out? You and Tony Arazadon DJ quite a bit.
Flipside: Tony is the man. He DJs all the time. When Jump Smokers do shows he doesn’t come with us unless it fits his schedule. We’re going to China in March to perform. Tony will definitely clear the schedule for that. If he has time to come, then he’ll come and play the keys live.
Dainjazone: Name the members of Jump Smokers.
Flipside: There are three members that perform and one member behind the scenes. We all have alter egos to differentiate from our DJ and production career; Roman is the vocalist, I’m V-Scratch, Tony is Reydon. Those are the performers and the other is Johnny Digital. He is our multimedia guy. He did our website and our logo. He was one of the guys who did Kanye’s first website. He also did Twista’s and John Legend’s website. He’s family to us, so when we first started the group we asked him to be a part of the group.
